Tree Seedlings

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What are the tree seedlings you sell?
A. We sell coniferous (evergreen) seedlings because they are hardy, ship well
and adapt to most soil conditions. This includes several spruces, pines, hemlocks and cedars.

2. What species should I order?

We often make recommendations depending on the destination and desired effect, so just fill in your preferred species and please mention a second choice in the comments. We'll try to get you the trees you really want to present as gifts.

The Red Spruce is the daintiest and most suitable for baby showers or anywhere a small, niceley shaped little tree is desired. It is also Nova Scotia's emblem tree, so very popular in the east! Black Spruce is well suited to planting near the ocean because of its salt tolerance. Black Spruce has a bluish tinge, but not quite as blue as the Blue Spruce which is a non-native hybrid species. White Spruce is the fastest grower and will be quite tall in mid-spring. It's a beautifully shaped tree seedling.

The pines (White Pine, Red Pine) are also popular with their long attractive needles, even as babies. We usually stock Eastern Cedar, Eastern Hemlock and once in a while, Eastern Larch (the only coniferous tree that loses its needles in the fall)

Eastern Hemlock
was harvested extensively by the ship building industry and is known for its ability to repel water. Now, it is quite rare in certain parts of the country. We try to encourage planting of Eastern Hemlock to help restore the beautiful hemlock forests in Nova Scotia. Limited quantities of hemlock. Contact us early (early May is great).

3. How big are the seedlings?
A. In the spring, the seedlings range from 6 to 12 inches (10-25 cm), including a 2-3 inch planting plug. Of course, they are much bigger by fall. Red spruce is the smallest, white spruce is one of the largest but the seedlings rarely exceed 10".

4. How much lead time do you need before the event?
A. As much as possible, but we've been known to accomplish the impossible! Two to three weeks is usually sufficient for a small order, even with our "Plant a Memory" team doing the decorating. For large commercial orders, please allow for a minimum of 3 weeks for wrapping, tagging, shipping, etc. (again, miracles are achievable).

5. What does it mean to place a 'reservation'?
A. Reservations allow us to plan our retail season effectively. Unlike inanimate objects trees must be planted well in advance (a year or two) before they are planted. We like to have reservations in by mid-May, but can often accomodate throughout the season.

6. Can I mix different species in one order?
A. By all means. Many of our customers like a 50/50 mix or even 25/25/25/25. We can recommend the ones that work well together.

7. How do I wrap seedlings if I choose to do it myself?

You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to decorating, wrapping or potting tree seedlings for your guests or customers. Most, however, choose to wrap their trees [video] , tie them with a bow and attach a tag with a special message.

Invoicing & Shipping

When will I be invoiced?
We allow time for you to receive your RSVPs before invoicing unless you request an early invoice. Your invoice will arrive after the quantities and decorating details have all been worked out, generally the month before your event. Payment options include Interac (email bank transfer - preferred), Paypal and Credit Card. Sorry. No cheques.

When will my order be sent out?
All bare root plug trees will be shipped 7-10 days before your event date. If we wrap or decorate, we insure delivery 2-3 days before your event.

What about shipping and delivery costs?
Trees are couriered anywhere within mainland Nova Scotia for $30. Out of province orders will be shipped via UPS Standard or Canada Post Expedited, usually at about the same cost. We need your filled in reservation and quantity to estimate shipping costs, which are dependent on destination postal code for accurate shipping and handling fees. You can also choose Xpress Delivery which is a bit more costly but necessary for rush orders.

How long will the trees last before being planted?
After being wrapped, the Treelings are usually good for a couple of weeks before they ened to be potted or planted. Please keep them in a cool environment with natural light. Their main requirement is water - if they dry, they die. If you have received a tree and are unable to plant it outside within a week or so, unwrap it and drop it in a glass with about an inch of water until you can plant. Don't let it dry and it's good that way for weeks!
You can also plant the tree in an indoor pot [video] until you are able to plant it outside. City trees do great on a patio or balcony!

What if something is not right with my order?
Please contact us immediately should you have any problems at all with your order. We want you to be happy and satisfied with your purchase. If something is not right please call at 902-347-2602 or email us. It's important that your event is 'treemendous'! in every way!

Treelings Green Gifts & Nursery has been shipping tree seedlings across Canada since 2004 for weddings, corporate events and other 'earth-approved' occasions. We also sell seedlings and small trees for landscaping and forest remediation and like to work with the land owners to insure healthy reforestation. Our NGO tree planting projects are for very special trees and very special people.

Planting trees for any occasion just makes us feel better about our place in the scheme of things. We know we did do something, in our own small way to help heal the planet. When we plant a tree, we leave a legacy for future generations. Plant a tree and you plant a memory that lives on into perpetuity. Trees can live hundreds, even a thousand years into the future. Trees can bear fruit or nuts, provide shade from the heat of summer and shelter from the winter's blast. Trees offer fuel and lumber and many by-products used in the building trade.

Beautifully wrapped Evergreen Tree Seedlings carry the right message
for your family, friends and customers.

"I am thankful "for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky
and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes"
- e. e. cummings
